Let me now tell you about Blake. Blake was born in 1997. Within a few weeks of his birth he was diagnosed as suffering from Downs Syndrome.

Blake’s father had died several months before the birth, after being admitted to hospital following two heart attacks. He had suffered from ill health for some time and, as a consequence, had also been unemployed.

Blake’s mother had been working as a sales assistant in a greengrocer’s shop in an effort to make ends meet. When her husband died, she had to give up her employment in order to care for Blake. They resided in local authority accommodation and she existed entirely on state benefits.

At the time of his father’s death, Blake’s parents had no savings and there was no insurance to cover the funeral expenses. A funeral grant of £800 was paid by the Benefits Agency.

Blake’s grandfather has been a Freemason for over 20 years. He lives locally and although retired and living on a pension, he does all he can both financially and emotionally to support his daughter and grandson. Incidentally, the Grandfather’s Lodge paid £500 to meet the balance of the funeral costs.

Blake is a happy child. He attends a Special Needs School where he is described as a lively and popular boy, who has a caring nature and is always eager to help others. A Petition on his behalf was accepted in July 2001 when he was only 4 years old.

When this grandfather joined the Craft all those years ago, he could not have known the tragedies which would befall his son-in-law, or the challenges that would face his grandson.

It is because the grandfather was a Freemason that the Trust has been able to help Blake. It is also because past generations of Freemasons have laid down our substantial reserves that we are able to help the children and grandchildren of Freemasons today.

It is also because all past Freemasons played a part in establishing this charity that it is ready and able to help the children and grandchildren of Freemasons today.

Charity is, and always has been, an essential qualification of every Freemason’s heart. It is one of the principles on which Freemasonry was founded and will always rest.
